About the Character
The CW's official character description: "a Texas Ranger Captain, a trailblazer in his division, confident, sharp as a razor. Captain James, as the only African American man in the Austin headquarters and one of only a few in the entire Ranger division, has true grit and a wry sense of humor."[1]
History
Former partner to Cordell Walker, Larry ultimately worked toward being promoted to Ranger Captain while Cordell was undercover for 10 months. As a Ranger, Larry and Cordell managed to bring in dozens of criminals, and shared a positive working relationship, even considering each other friends.
Now, as Captain, things are slightly strained between Larry and Cordell. Larry hadn't told Cordell about the promotion, due to the hectic trajectory of Cordell's life around that time. They also hadn't managed to keep in touch much while Cordell was away, mostly due to Cordell's inability to call his family and friends while undercover.
Larry has mentioned how he hopes to improve the Texas Rangers performance, claiming they haven't been doing very well and he hopes to make a positive change by keeping things by the book and refusing to slack on the job. He is sometimes at odds with Cordell, due to Cordell's obsession with finding who murdered his wife, and disbelief in Carlos Mendoza as being the culprit. Larry and Liam (Cordell's brother) have been keeping in touch over time, and they both agree that Cordell needs to let it go.
In the episode Don't Fence Me In, it is revealed that Liam has been further investigating Emily's murder (as has Capt. James, according to Liam's coworker Ada), and has begun to look into the drone surveillance footage from the night of the crime. In Duke, he confronts Capt. James over this and they make it clear that they both believe that something is "off" about the murder.
